Informal Learning in N. England

Students in England

London and Northern England, United Kingdom
Summer Session I 2020 (June 1-17)

**This is an approved course for Pathways Concept 7**

This is a unique, intense two-week study abroad experience in the Northern England (Lancashire and Yorkshire) and London. In this experience, you will explore places that you may never otherwise learn about or see on a typical visit to England, while focusing on learning about, as well as creatively documenting, the pedagogy of place.

Specifically, the course is designed to take students to cities and towns in the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire such as Liverpool, Manchester, York, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, and Hull that represent the industrial heartland of Northern England. The focus of the course is how national and local narratives on industrialization, politics, radicalism, race, immigration, gender, class, and sexuality from Northern England are represented within the cultural curriculum, that is, in national and local museums and historic and radical history walks.

Our guiding question is, if these places could talk, what would they tell or teach us about the how English museums, archives, cities, and other cultural sites represent narratives on industrialization, politics, radicalism, race, immigration, gender, class, and sexuality?

While the travel to each location is unique, there will also opportunities to experience the everyday culture of England through markets, town centers, and negotiating public transport. A final unique aspect is that one of the goals is on how to represent our experiences and map where we’ve been using creative technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality.
