As much as we would like for every student to study abroad, for some, an international experience is not feasible. Not being able to travel should not prevent students from engaging in global learning. The Global@Home Resources for Students were compiled with the hope of connecting students to opportunities that would allow for global experiences while at home.
Opportunities for External Funding
See below for a sampling of grant funders involved in virtual exchange and global teaching and learning initiatives.
The Stevens Initiative has created a Coronavirus Response Fund to support the transition of global education programs from in-person to virtual exchanges. The Initiative will also fund preparation for future virtual exchange implementation and the adaptation of existing virtual exchange programs as they respond to this global crisis. The response fund is for education and non-profit organizations based in the United States and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) proposing to conduct activities between the U.S. and MENA. See here to stay up-to-date on future funding opportunities.
International dimensions of the humanities can be supported through the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) through such programs as the challenge grants, fellowships and faculty research, curriculum development, summer seminars and institutes, translation projects and special program categories that encourage the understanding of the humanities in designated countries.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) offers a range of funding opportunities with potential for international education. Several programs of particular note are:
- The International Research Fellowships Program (IRFP)
Encourages scientists and engineers in their early careers to experience international scientific collaboration - The International Research Network Connections (IRNC)
Supports international research collaborations - International Research and Education: Planning Visits and Workshops
Supports the early development of international research and educational projects - Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE)
Fosters innovative models of international collaborative research and education at U.S. institutions
The International Virtual Exchange Conference (IVEC) is the largest and most prominent event on virtual exchange, providing a forum for an audience of deans, directors, faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and professionals from institutions around the world interested in technology, international education, and new pedagogies.
The Central Asia University Partnerships Program (UniCEN) is a platform to increase sustainable collaborations between US and Central Asian higher education institutions.
- See a project funded through this grant between Penn State and KazATU here
The goal of this virtual exchange program is to connect U.S. and the Dominican Republic higher education institutions to work with Dominican and U.S. students on project development and innovation in times of crisis. This program will provide a platform for dialogue and training for young leaders focused on workforce development, social entrepreneurship, leadership, decision-making and planning while aiming to promote a positive change driven mindset. The project should provide interactive modules on leadership, community issues, and digital citizenship. See here for more details. Deadline is July 7.
Funding may be available through embassies in other countries as well.
The American Council on Education (ACE) is a membership organization that mobilizes the higher education community to shape effective public policy and foster innovative, high-quality practice.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation offers grants to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive.
The Foundation's grants database allows you to browse grants awarded by the Foundation since 1969. Filters are also available to search for grants within a particular program, timeframe, or geographic location.
100,000 Strong in the Americas uses the principle of leveraged innovation with higher education institutions (HEIs) that demonstrate the greatest commitment and innovation toward increasing study abroad opportunities between the United States and countries in the Western Hemisphere.
In applying for the Innovation Fund grants, HEIs will be asked to demonstrate how they will assert leadership in implementing the innovations proposed, how they will address on-campus barriers to student mobility, how they will maintain student engagement, and how they will commit to making concrete changes to expand access to study abroad as sending and/or hosting institutions.
Lisle International provides Global Seed Grants to support innovative projects which advance intercultural understanding through shared experiences, with the goal of creating a more just social order. Projects may seek to bridge a variety of community divides, including ethnic, cultural, religious, racial or gender perspectives, anywhere in the world.
Grants of $500 to $3,000 are available to innovative projects that match the mission of Lisle. Lisle awards between three and eight grants each year to projects in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers approximately 470 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others.
In addition to several new program models designed to meet the changing needs of U.S. academics and professionals, Fulbright offers flexible awards including multi-country opportunities.
FACE Foundation and the French Embassy will be supporting institutions which are creatively maintaining French-American collaboration by integrating virtual exchange or other types of global learning in their curricula. Projects need to be implemented collaboratively by at least one US and one French institution of higher learning or international education provider and demonstrate why they have the potential to boost study abroad after the pandemic. See here for more information.
