Role & Scope

Consistent with its Global Land Grant mission in teaching, research, and service, Virginia Tech is actively engaged in the delivery of many types of global learning experiences, and international education has become an integral and vital component of university life.

Responding to growing interest in such experiences, the Global Education Approval Committee strives to ensure that Virginia Tech delivers study abroad opportunities that meet the academic needs of our students, faculty and staff. All programming abroad is expected to maintain standards of quality in the delivery of instruction, support services, and administration as those on campus.

It is therefore essential that all international programming be carried out in a manner that is:

  • Appropriate to the mission of the university
  • Integrated into the undergraduate and graduate curricula
  • Subject to regular, periodic review, evaluation, and assessment, according to the university’s normal review procedures for academic programs
  • Compliant with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and institutional policies

The Global Education Approval Committee is appointed and charged by Guru Ghosh, vice president for Outreach and International Affairs in support of the requirements articulated in University Global Travel Policy 1070 issued by President Timothy D. Sands in 2014.
